Guardian: The value of a secure .uk namespace – Nominet’s .uk consultation

By at December 20, 2012 | 11:33 am | 0 Comment

Nominet’s Phil Kingsland responds to Adam Grunwerg’s criticism of the company’s proposed launch of the .uk domain:

We’ve read and listened to a wide range of responses and views on Nominet’s proposal to introduce a new, more secure second-level domain space in the UK (ie yourbusiness.uk instead of yourbusiness.co.uk), alongside the additional third level .uk domains (.co.uk, .org.uk etc). This includes last week’s Media Network article by Adam Grunwerg.

We believe that the proposed product would create a new, trusted online home for British businesses and we hope it would help to support the internet economy by combating cybercrime and creating a namespace which consumers trust; driving additional e-commerce and online transactions.

Nominet’s Board November Report

By at December 20, 2012 | 11:14 am | 0 Comment

The Nominet board met on the 29th November 2012 and have issued the following statement regarding the .uk consultation:

The Board received an update briefing on the progress of the ongoing direct.uk consultation in which the registry structure could be changed so as to allow registrations at the second level of the .uk domain hierarchy. The Board noted the large number of formal consultation responses received so far, and the very wide range of opinions already submitted in relation to the main features of the proposal. It was clear that a full analysis following the end of the consultation period would take several weeks The Board would then consider that feedback and decide next steps, with agenda time at the meeting scheduled for 26th February being set aside. The Board thanked the Nominet staff dealing with the consultation for their good work to date in bringing the proposal to very wide public notice and debate.

What is wrong with the Nominet .uk proposal?
By Stephen Wilde – December 2012
On first look MyName.uk looks more attractive than MyName.co.uk. Similarly, “extra security” sounds good conceptually. However, this simplistic view glosses over the overwhelmingly negative consequences to existing businesses, consumer trust, and the UK internet economy, once you examine the details of the proposal.
